How to Train Rats to Use a Litter Box
The first step in training a rat to use a litter box is to set a consistent schedule. Each time your rat poops, scoop it up and place it into the litter box. It’s also important to do a spot clean twice a day. This will help your rat to realize that the litter box is the only place in the cage where they can go to the bathroom.
After several weeks of use, you’ll notice that your rat stops messing up the rest of his cage. Some rats take a little longer than others, and stubborn ratties may refuse to use the litter box. If this happens, you need to provide a clean and safe environment for your rat to feel comfortable.
It’s important to clean your rat’s cage regularly to avoid an unpleasant odor. Once the cage smells clean, your rat will be more apt to use the box. Once your rat learns to use the litter box, be sure to do a deep clean once a week.
You can buy a litter box from your local pet store or on Amazon. Alternatively, you can make your own by using a clean cardboard box. However, you should replace the cardboard box frequently as it will get ruined quickly. You can also use a Tupperware container that is large enough for your rat to use.
