How to Get Rid of Rats in Trees
If you’ve noticed rats on your property, there are some steps you can take to get rid of them. Rats are attracted to food, so you need to make sure your garbage is covered and that your dog food is stored in a tightly sealed container. You can also use steel wool to plug holes around your home.
First, you need to secure the trees in your yard. Rats will climb up a tree, so make sure to trim any branches that touch your home or any wires. Another way to keep rats away is to keep a rat guard around them. This can be a simple piece of sheet metal that is 18 to 24 inches wide and as long as your tree’s circumference plus two inches. For added security, you can also use wires that can be bent like giant staples. You can place the wire against the tree’s trunk and bend the wires outward to hold them together.
Rats are nocturnal animals. They may spend the day in the open, but they will go back to their nest at night. Their preference for home comforts and warmth is apparent in their nocturnal behavior. A single nest may contain between five and ten rats. If there are multiple nests in the same area, they can form colonies. Look for signs of rat activity, such as excessive garbage, clutter, and dense vegetation.
