Do Rats Need Vaccines?
Rats are often prone to respiratory infections due to bacteria and viruses. If you notice your pet rat is showing respiratory symptoms, you should take it to the vet as soon as possible. He or she may prescribe antibiotics to help cure the infection. Without proper treatment, the disease can progress and cause serious health complications. Some rats may also suffer from tumors.
Though pet rats do not need vaccines, they do need regular check-ups with a veterinarian. Annual physical examinations and fecal tests are important for the health of your rat. In addition, you should have your rat neutered if you have more than one rat.
Domesticated rats make great pets. They are very sociable and intelligent. They get along with their owners and can be easily trained. These pets can be kept indoors and are nocturnal, making them a very adaptable animal. In contrast to other pets, rats do not require vaccinations and do not transmit diseases. Rats are also able to breed very quickly, with a female ovulating about once every four days and her fetus developing over a period of twenty one days. They can have as many as seven to fourteen young in a single birth.
Rats can get respiratory and teeth issues if they are not given proper care. These problems can be treated by your veterinarian. If you find that your rat is developing overgrown incisors, you should see a veterinarian as soon as possible. A veterinarian can grind or file down the incisors if necessary. Infections can also affect the respiratory system.
