Can You Put Rats and Guinea Pigs Together?

Rats prefer living with rats, but guinea pigs prefer companionship with other guinea pigs. Rats are territorial animals, so if there’s more than one male in the same enclosure, the rats may fight. Rats also need space to exercise.
Rats are not as sensitive as guinea pigs, so they should not be housed with each other. Rats can also carry diseases to guinea pigs, so it’s best to keep these two species separate. If you can’t keep them apart, you can keep them in a separate cage.
Although both species are known for their territoriality, you should not mix them. If you plan on putting them together, you’ll need to make sure you’ve researched the species before buying them.
