Can You Burn Rats Out?
One of the first things you can do is clean up the area where rats are living. Remove any clutter. If possible, replace wood flooring with concrete. Keep the floor at least 18 inches above the ground. Remove any old fences and wooden steps. Remove rotting and decaying materials from the backyard and inside the home.
You can also fill rat burrows with steel wool or mesh wire. After a few days, stomp down the burrows with a shovel. This is a more humane solution than putting poison on rats. In addition, rat infestations can be prevented by relocating rat colonies.
Despite the fact that mothballs contain naphthalene, they do little to repel rats and require an excessive amount to have any effect. Additionally, the lingering smell is unsuitable for homes with children and pets. Moreover, rats do not like to be near predators and are unlikely to behave in a manner that would attract them.
Another option is to use dry ice, which can kill rats that are near people. Dry ice can be more expensive than smoke bombs, but it is more effective. This method should only be used when rats have encroached on human dwellings or have infested shelters.
