Can Rats Drink Out of Bowls?

Rats are omnivores, meaning they can eat both animal-based and plant-based foods. Because they cannot synthesize amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals on their own, they must obtain these nutrients through their food. Fortunately, rat food contains most of the necessary nutrients that they require. The remaining nutrients must be supplied by other sources.

Rats can drink out of bowls, but the bowls need to be large enough. A small rat cage, for instance, may need a small water bowl. You can also use a water bottle in the cage, which is more convenient for smaller spaces. In hotter months, you can also add ice to your rat’s bowl to make the water cooler.

Rats will drink about 10 ml of water per 100 grams of body weight. On hotter days, they’ll drink even more water. You should also provide water throughout the day for your rat. However, it’s not a good idea to deprive your pet rat of water as this can cause serious problems, including kidney disease.

Water bottles can also be dangerous for rats. Algae can grow inside them and cause illness in rats. Also, rat water bottles can be easily tipped over, especially if the rat is playful. Using a heavy bowl or a bowl attached to the cage will help you keep them from tipping it over.
