Is There Mosquitoes in Florida?

Getting bit by mosquitoes isn’t a pleasant experience. It can carry diseases and linger on your skin, causing infection. Luckily, you can protect yourself from mosquitoes with proper knowledge.

Whether you’re living in North Florida, South Florida, or anywhere in between, there are a few species of mosquitoes that you should be aware of. The first is the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This species is genetically modified and can spread yellow fever, Zika, and other diseases.

Another type of mosquito is the Culex quinquefasciatus, also known as the Florida SLE mosquito. This species feeds on nectar, plant fluids, and blood when it lays eggs. It is a small brown mosquito that is found throughout Florida.

Other mosquitoes that are active during daytime are Aedes triseriatus and Anopheles albumaus. These two species feed on humans and other mammals.

These mosquitoes are found in swampy areas, ponds, and marshes. They can be found in wooded areas, as well.

During the summer months, mosquitoes are most active. These species thrive in temperature above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. During the winter, most mosquitoes remain in the larval stage.

In addition, there are several invasive species of mosquitoes that have been introduced into the state. Despite being a beautiful place to live, Florida is plagued by a variety of insects. These mosquitoes can cause disease and are a nuisance to many residents.

Some invasive species have been brought to Florida through international trade. The Centers for Disease Control advises pregnant women to stay away from areas where these mosquitoes are present.
