How to Prevent Mosquitoes From Biting Your Dog

Several mosquito borne diseases are transmitted to humans and pets through bites. There are several methods to prevent mosquitoes from biting you and your pet.

First, keep your dog indoors when possible. This is especially true during mosquito season. If your dog spends a lot of time outside, keep your pet’s water bowls and feeders clean and empty frequently.

Secondly, try using natural insect repellents. These include clove oil and lemon eucalyptus oil. These are healthier for your dog and they are effective against mosquitoes.

Third, use a heartworm preventative on your dog. These medications are available in pill form or in ointment. They work by killing the larvae before they reach the adult stage. This is important, as some species of mosquitoes are becoming resistant to current treatments.

Fourth, try to eliminate standing water. A puddle, a bird bath, or a stagnant pond can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. If your dog has access to these, remove them from the area, as they can harbor mosquitoes.

Fifth, avoid walking your dog in the early morning or evening hours. These times are the most active for mosquitoes. This means you may want to walk your dog during the day instead.

If your dog does not have a serious reaction, you may not need to do anything. However, if your dog has a rash or shows signs of swelling after being bitten, it is best to visit your veterinarian. Depending on your dog’s health, you may need to use antibiotics or other treatment to relieve the itch.
