How to Prevent an Allergic Reaction to Mosquitoes
Having an allergic reaction to mosquitoes can be extremely uncomfortable and painful. However, it’s possible to prevent a severe reaction with the right treatments. There are many medications available, including over-the-counter antihistamines and steroid creams.
The signs of a severe allergic reaction include swelling, itching, hives, and even fever. A doctor should be consulted immediately if any of these symptoms appear.
Most people are affected by a mild allergic reaction to mosquitoes, but some people have more serious reactions. These severe reactions can be life-threatening. In cases of anaphylaxis, the person should seek emergency medical care. If the symptoms do not go away after a few hours, the person should be hospitalized.
A doctor can prescribe epinephrine injections to treat these types of symptoms. Typically, this is a last resort. If the patient has a mild reaction, the symptoms can be relieved with over-the-counter antihistamines. Alternatively, the physician can recommend prescription-strength creams.
Some of the symptoms of a mosquito allergy may include itching and redness. Other symptoms can include swelling, joint aches, and hives. These symptoms are caused by an immune system reaction to the polypeptides and enzymes found in the mosquito saliva.
The most serious type of allergic reaction to mosquitoes is anaphylaxis. In anaphylaxis, a person may experience a variety of symptoms, such as wheezing, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the throat.
Despite the dangers of anaphylaxis, many people are allergic to the saliva from female mosquitoes. This type of reaction is also called Skeeter Syndrome. It’s a rare condition that causes the person to develop large, red, welt-like bumps.
