How Do Mosquitoes Survive the Winter?

Depending on the type of mosquito you are dealing with, they may or may not be able to survive the winter. However, if you want to know how to keep mosquitoes out of your house, there are a few different methods you can employ.

One way is by using a safe haven. A safe haven is a place that can hold eggs for the entire life cycle. This allows the eggs to wait until they are ready to mate.

A safe haven is a location that can provide a source of food and water. When there is no water, the mosquitoes go into a form of insect hibernation. In this state, they stop consuming blood meals and sugary foods. They store nutrients in their diapause, a process that slows their metabolisms.

Another method for survival is by hiding. Mosquitoes may be found hiding in holes and crevices in trees, in animal burrows, and even in storm sewers. Some mosquitoes are able to stay alive indoors, especially in homes with basements.

They can also be found in piles of damp, rotting wood, or even in the foundations of houses. These locations offer some protection from the elements, and are often ideal places to hide.

The female mosquito’s lifespan is generally around 42-56 days. She will lay eggs before hibernating. She then resumes her life cycle when the weather becomes warmer. It is estimated that the female can lay up to 300 eggs at a time.
