How Do Mosquitoes Bite Dogs?

Symptoms of mosquitoes bites vary from dog to dog. Some may not have symptoms at all, while others will have severe reactions. If your pet has a serious allergy to mosquitoes, you should seek immediate medical attention.

The first symptom of a mosquito bite on a dog is itching. A small welt will eventually form and will usually disappear on its own. Occasionally, a welt can turn into an open wound, and the surrounding area is susceptible to infection by environmental contaminants.

A more severe reaction to mosquitoes bites can lead to anaphylactic shock. Anaphylactic shock is deadly in a matter of hours. If you notice your dog having an itchy rash, or if your dog has been bitten multiple times, you should seek immediate veterinary attention.

Infection is rarely the result of mosquito bites, but can occur if the bitten area is very sensitive. This can include your dog’s ears, eyes, and nose. The swelling to these areas can affect breathing, mobility, and sight.

In severe cases, you should contact your primary veterinarian. They can give your pet intravenous fluids and medication to combat the effects of the bites. You can also get your dog’s coat treated with anti-mosquito ingredients.

A cold compress can help reduce the pain and itch of a dog’s mosquito bite. The cold should be placed on a towel to avoid ice burns. The first day or two is the best time to use a cold compress. If you don’t see any positive results after a few days, consider another remedy.
