Do Mosquitoes Eat Blood?

Unlike humans, mosquitoes do not have arteries and veins to access blood. Rather, they take their meals from a variety of sources. They prefer plants with a high water content. These plants include basil, lemongrass, and mint. Several types of snakes and frogs are also part of the mosquito food pyramid.

Female mosquitoes do not need to eat blood. They do however need other food sources to survive. They can also feed on other animals. They will go to a shaded location to lay eggs. After they have laid their eggs, they will hunt for a host. They will then suck on the blood to provide them with nutrients. They can eat up to five millionths of a liter of blood in one meal.

While pregnant women release more volatile substances from their skin, they are still more attractive to mosquitoes. They are also more likely to exhale at a higher volume.

Researchers have studied how the mosquitoes perceive blood type antigens in people. They found that people with blood type O tend to attract more mosquitoes than people with type A or B. This is likely due to their body heat and the presence of lactic acid and other compounds on their skin.

The mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide in the air. This can alert them to the presence of humans. As a result, they will avoid people with type A and B blood. They will attack those with type O blood.
