Can Mosquitoes Fly to High Floors?

Considering that most household mosquitoes don’t want to fly over 25 feet, it’s surprising to learn that some species actually can. In fact, some have even been seen flying to the top of tall buildings.

According to the GHMC, experts have confirmed that vertical breeding is a common practice. They believe that vertical breeding is a natural process that occurs in various ecosystems. These species have adapted to living in lower-altitude environments, and the increasing number of high-rises provides them with more breeding opportunities.

Although some species of mosquitoes can find food and mate above tree-canopy level, most don’t seem to feel comfortable flying above 25 feet. This is likely due to the lack of oxygen in the air.

Nevertheless, some species have been known to hitch rides on luggage and potted plants. Others breed in tree holes as high as 50 feet above the ground. Some have also been found breeding on the tops of high-rises.

There are a few ways that you can prevent this from happening. One way is to trim greenery and clear standing water. Another is to use repellants. DEET is a good choice. Regardless of the method, be sure to keep your house cool to reduce the mosquito population.

Whether or not mosquitoes can fly to the top of your apartment building is a question that you will need to address. These insects can carry numerous diseases, including dengue fever. In the past, cases of dengue were reported on lower floors, but they are now mainly spotted on the eighth or tenth floor.
