Will Flies Stick to Honey?
Insects are attracted to sweet foods, and honey is no exception. A study in Cell Reports reveals that honey attracts more flies than vinegar. The reason is that honey is more sweet than vinegar, which can make flies uncomfortable. This discovery could lead to new mosquito control ideas.
If you want to catch flies in a simple, affordable way, try using a sandwich bag. Cut the bag into 1-inch wide strips. Place it on a counter or other location. Then, fill it with honey, sugar water, or dish soap, and seal the bag with a rubber band. Once the bag is filled, place a piece of decomposing fruit or other sweet items on it. The flies will soon fall into the honey!
In a second experiment, a mixture of honey and apple cider vinegar attracted fruit flies better than either substance alone. The results are shown in figures two and three. The first experiment attracted 14 fruit flies, while the second experiment attracted only nine. The same experiment was conducted with the two mixtures, but this time, the vinegar was added to the honey.
If you do not want flies in your home, you can try a sticky trap. These sticky traps work by luring flies with a sweet scent. They are ideal for areas where flies are a problem. In addition to attracting flies, these traps also work to prevent flies from bothering you.
