Why Can Flies Get in But Not Out?
If you have a glass window or sliding door, houseflies will fly against it looking for a way in or out. Their compound eyes consist of thousands of individual visual receptors and they can see up to a few yards away. Unlike us, however, flies do not have a pupil so they cannot regulate the amount of light coming into a room. They also have difficulty seeing colour, so they cannot discriminate the different shades of light coming into the room.
Another reason that flies can get into your home is if they can smell your food. These bugs are drawn to homes that have both warm and cold air. If you have a pet, there is a good chance that you have food and pet waste all around the house. This is why it is so important to clean up pet waste and secure your garbage properly.
Once inside, flies lay their eggs in various areas of your house. Most commonly, the first signs of a fly infestation include crawling maggots and baby flies. Flies can also lay eggs on food stored in the attic or basement. A female fly can lay as many as 500 eggs within a week, so if you have a food source, flies will continue to appear in the house.
Flies are an important part of our ecosystem, and they are attracted to dead organic matter, rubbish, and moisture. They are beneficial to the environment, recycling the dead matter and feeding numerous animals. However, their presence in our homes can be a real problem, so it is important to take steps to prevent them from entering our homes.
