How Long Do Cluster Flies Live?
If you have cluster flies in your home, the first step is to prevent them from returning. The best way to avoid these bugs is to keep windows closed. During the winter, cluster flies tend to stay indoors, and can be attracted to lights and heating fixtures. If you see them around your home, you should treat it with insecticide before fall.
Cluster flies usually live for about one to two months. Their lifespan can be shortened if they are exposed to cold weather. The insects will hibernate if the temperature drops below 54 degrees. When it comes to reproduction, cluster flies lay eggs in soil where earthworms live. When the eggs hatch, cluster flies begin searching for earthworms, and they will continue to breed.
Adult cluster flies can live for as long as 30 days. They will lay up to 5-6 eggs a day, which means a cluster fly can lay as many as 120 eggs in one day. These eggs are laid in the soil and mature in about 11 to 14 days. After they emerge as adults, they feed on flowers.
To prevent an infestation of cluster flies in your home, the first step is to get rid of any food sources that they are able to find. Cluster flies will usually settle in crevices or cracks around your home. If you want to kill cluster flies completely, you can apply a synthetic insecticide that is effective against these insects.
