When temperatures get too cold, flies go into a “diapause”, where they stop breathing. This is a temporary state that lasts only a few weeks, after which they will start living again. Flies that are cold-tolerant often hibernate as larvae at the bottom of a pool. As the temperature rises, the eggs will hatch and the flies will resume their life cycle.
In warm weather, maggots hatch into flies in two to three days, while in cold temperatures, it takes 27 days for them to develop into adults. Flies can survive for up to three weeks in a cold room, but their lifespan is much shorter. It’s also important to turn over the soil in flower beds and compost bins, or manure that you might have around the house. These things may contain maggots, so turning over the soil will help to expose them.
Flies are not rare in homes, and they are not limited to summertime. They can be common year-round in areas with humid temperatures.
