Do Flies Like Cold Weather?
It is not clear if flies like cold weather or not, but they generally prefer warmer temperatures. When the temperature drops below 32degF, flies begin to die in about 4 weeks. This is a result of the cold weather causing them to slow down their life cycle. It takes them at least two months to grow from larvae into flies.
Flies collect fat in their bodies to survive the cold. This fat can be seen during dissection of overwintering flies. Although they do not die from freezing temperatures, they do reduce their metabolism, which is why they seek out warmth in sunny days. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that the cold weather doesn’t completely kill the flies.
As adults, flies spend most of their time mating and laying eggs. They lay the eggs over 3 days. The larvae hatch out and feed on nearby food sources. The resulting maggots are a significant problem for homeowners. If the cold weather persists, take steps to control the breeding population.
During cold weather, cluster flies may become more common. Sealing access points can keep them out. If they return, you can swat or vacuum them off. Cluster flies can be a nuisance, but they typically leave the area in the spring.
