Can Fruit Flies Bite Humans?

Fruit flies are a common household nuisance and can appear threatening if you are in an area where you are likely to encounter them. While they cannot bite humans, they can cause skin irritation and transmit potentially harmful bacteria. Some of these bacteria include E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria.

The adult fruit fly is about an eighth of an inch long and is light brown or tan. They do not bite humans, but they can easily enter homes through open windows. They may also be brought into a home by fruit or rotting foods in a compost pile. They are not dangerous to humans and will usually die off once the cold weather sets in.

Fruit flies are attracted to fruit because of its sticky, fermented liquids. They are also attracted to light sources. If you have overripe fruits in your kitchen, fruit flies can easily get inside. While you should take steps to protect your fruits from these insects, there is no reason to panic – just be prepared to take immediate action.

If you suspect that your fruit is infested with fruit flies, you can use a fly trap. Place an apple cider vinegar-soaked plastic bag near a fruit fly infestation. This will attract fruit flies and make it difficult for them to escape.
