What Do Fleas Like to Eat?
Fleas are parasitic insects that live and feed on warm-bodied animals. This includes cats and dogs, but they also feed on birds, poultry, and other animals. They feed on blood and feces, as well as dead and decaying plant matter. While adult fleas feed primarily on blood, the larvae feed on decaying animal and plant matter. Fleas are also capable of escaping from the host animal’s environment.
Fleas can survive for up to 100 days without a host, but they prefer to feed on a pet. Without a blood meal, they cannot lay eggs and their population would rapidly decrease. Once a blood meal is provided, fleas will lay eggs within a few days.
Fleas feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals. Their larvae are microscopic and live in dark, damp areas. Their diet includes organic plant matter, dead insects, and feces. Despite their small size, they have a huge appetite. The adult female flea can consume up to 15 times her body weight in food per day. Male fleas do not need as much food and can survive on less.
Fleas are most common in pets’ necks, ears, backs, and the base of the tail. Flea bites can be itchy or cause a reaction in the body. If you suspect that you have a flea infestation, you should try to eliminate them as soon as you notice them.
