Flea Spray and Spot On Together
There are several different types of flea treatments for dogs, including flea spray and spot-on. Each works to kill existing fleas and prevent new ones from jumping on your dog. They also kill any flea reservoirs in your dog’s environment. It is important to apply flea treatments to your dog and any other animals that live with it.
The two most common flea control products are pyrethrum-based. These products kill adult fleas, ticks, lice, and mosquitoes, and can be used together or separately for prevention and maintenance. Reapplications are necessary if the infestation is severe, and you should wait at least a week between applications. Spot-on flea products contain the active ingredient Infest Stop(tm), which is an analogue of the juvenile hormone that directs flea eggs and larvae development. When adult fleas come into contact with the product, they die and lay dead eggs.
A spot-on flea treatment works by dispersing the chemical that kills fleas on your pet’s skin. This chemical is carried to the hair follicles and is then released. The chemical causes fleas to die instantly. The dosage required for a single treatment depends on the lifestyle of your pet. For dogs who do not bathe frequently, applying a spot-on flea treatment may be necessary every few weeks.
Before using either spot-on flea treatment, consult a veterinarian to ensure it is safe for your pet. The vet will recommend which product is best for your pet and environment.
