Do Fleas Like Food?

Adult fleas lay eggs after feeding on the blood of an animal, known as a “blood meal.” These eggs are hard to detect and are white and 0.5mm in size. Female fleas lay an average of 20 eggs per day, though they may lay more than this number on a single day. Once laid, these eggs hatch within 1 to 2 days, depending on the humidity level and temperature of the area.

The larvae of fleas feed almost as much as adult fleas do. The larvae will feed on dead skin and decaying plant matter. These foods are highly nutritious for fleas, and are essential to their survival. Although you may not want them laying eggs on your pet, you should still keep in mind that fleas are parasites and may need a host in order to reproduce.

While most fleas are harmless, many people become allergic to flea bites. In these cases, it is necessary to consult a doctor to determine what is causing the allergic reaction. In some people, flea bites can trigger a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This severe reaction can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

A thorough inspection of the home can eliminate flea infestations. If you think your home is a flea breeding ground, you should hire a pest control expert to remove any fleas that are found. You can also treat your lawn if your pet spends a lot of time outdoors. An easy way to determine if your home is infested is to use a pair of white athletic socks and hold them high on your leg. Any adult fleas will appear against the white background of the socks.
