Do Cockroaches Go Towards Light?

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects. They prefer dark environments and places to hide. They do not like light and will avoid it at all costs. Fortunately for us, they will not attack us if we leave them alone. In fact, they prefer dark environments more than light!

The reason for this is simple: light scares cockroaches. Since they are nocturnal, they will hide in dark corners and scurry away from light. The light is dangerous because bigger predators can spot them. It is this evolutionary instinct that makes cockroaches avoid bright areas. Despite their nocturnal nature, however, it has not been proven that light is a good way to prevent cockroaches from invading homes.

Cockroaches will not go towards the light if you switch it on. They will scurry away from light and hide in the dark if you leave it on for long periods of time. Consequently, light will reduce cockroach activity and minimize the damage that cockroaches can cause to your home.

The majority of species of cockroaches have wings, but they are not very good flyers. The majority use their feet to move around and escape. Those that do fly act like gliders and open their wings to glide from higher to lower surfaces. Cockroaches are most attracted to food that has high temperature and humidity.
