Can a Cockroach Get Inside Your Ear?

If you’ve ever wondered, “Can a cockroach get inside your earmold?” then you’re not alone. In fact, it can happen to anyone. It can occur because of a cockroach infestation or because a cockroach accidentally stumbles into a human ear. Once inside, the cockroach may move further into the ear until it gets stuck.

One Chinese man once had this experience, after waking up one morning to find a large cockroach inside his ear. He went to the Sanhe Hospital in Huiyan, China, to have it removed. But the specialist who examined the man found that there were about 10 more cockroaches inside his ear. They removed the cockroaches with tweezers. The cockroaches were German cockroaches, a type of cockroach commonly found in hotels and restaurants.

The CDC does not keep statistics on cockroaches getting into people’s ears. However, a few amazingly bizarre cases have been reported, including a California woman with a tick stuck inside her ear. Another case was of a man with a cricket that was seven centimeters long. A Chinese woman also had a jumping spider in her ear.

If you have found a cockroach inside your ear, the most common course of action is to visit a doctor, who can diagnose the infection. After the cockroach is removed, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.
