Ants

Where Can I Find Ants in Winter?

During the coldest months, you might notice a few ants around your home. They may be scout ants that were sent out by the colony to find food or water. They may also bring a swarm indoors to find warmth.

Most species of ants will choose warmth and shelter over food during winter. They put on extra fat to stay warm. The fat helps them to go without food for several months.

They also huddle in clusters to generate extra heat. They use structures to guide them and they mark trails with pheromones. They may find food and take it back to the nest.

In addition to their nests, ants can be found in cabinets, floors, walls, and appliances. They may also hide in small crevices or in hidden places. If you suspect a problem, it is best to contact a pest control expert for help.

Carpenter ants may be more active during the winter. Carpenter ants are nocturnal and they feed on food outside of your home. They are a common household pest and they may be present in your home all year long.

They build their nests under tree bark or in rocks. They can also build colonies on decks or in gardens. Some of these species will build their colonies deep underground.

If your home has a high temperature, ants may not be able to survive the cold. However, if your house is well insulated, you may have Carpenter ants year round.
