Where Ants Are Found

Several scientists have recently uncovered the distribution of ants across the world. Their discovery has opened new avenues for research.

These insects are found almost everywhere, except in the polar regions. Although the majority of ant species live in the soil, there are also ants that live under stones, rocks, and other objects. Several ants also live in rotting wood. These ants are called wood-nesting Pachycondyla.

Another type of ant is the eastern black carpenter ant. This species eats protein-rich substances found in plants. It also eats honeydew from aphids. These ants build nest tunnels in decaying wood. They also feed on live insects and sweets.

These ants are very active in the summer and fall. They often forage in the kitchen. Occasionally, these ants are found in the bathroom and laundry room.

Argentine ants are the largest ants in Ohio. They are also serious nuisances in hotels and restaurants. They are also found in golf courses and pastures.

Workers are about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long. They have a shiny black body. They also have two nodes in the petiole, which is attached to the upper part of the abdomen.

Queen ants are about half an inch long. They have wings that break off after mating. They also have a thorax with spines. They are very common in the United States.

Several scientists have recently identified the species of ants that live in the soil. They have discovered that the species are more diverse in the southern hemisphere.
