Do Ants Contain Protein?

Whether or not ants contain protein may be an interesting question. The answer will depend on the species of ants being tested.

In one study, ants were fed five different diets, ranging in protein to carbohydrate ratio. After 50 days, the number of ants in each colony was measured and mortality was estimated. The number of dead ants was recorded every two days.

The study found that, despite the high protein content, the macronutrient balance was still protein biased. This is due to the ant’s inability to tell the difference between solid and liquid food. The ants also regurgitate excess protein in the form of waste pellets.

While eating insects may seem like a bad idea, the ants have been eaten by humans for centuries. These creatures are easy to harvest and offer a variety of nutrients. While some species of insects can be poisonous, most species are safe to eat.

Ants may be useful as a source of antioxidants. They contain a substance called chitin, an insoluble fiber that may help with immune response. In addition to this, they may be good for heart health.

A 62-year-old man survived a heart attack in the outback by eating ants. During his recovery, he was found by search and rescue. The ants contained 14 grams of protein and 5.7 milligrams of iron.

Ants also contain potassium, which is important for heart health and blood circulation. These insects may also contain purines, which may increase uric acid production in the human body.
