Are Ants With Wings Bad?

During the spring and summer months, you may notice winged ants. They are mating ants. They are large black insects that look like wasps. They aren’t dangerous to humans but they do sting. Some ants are more prone to sting than others.

When winged ants swarm, they are looking for a new nest to build. The queens of these ant colonies are larger than the other ants in the colony. These queens mate and make lots of babies. They then take off their wings and start a new nest.

In addition to the queens, a colony will also have workers. These workers will search for food and water. The workers also protect the colony.

There are a few ant species that have wings. These include carpenter ants and flying black ants. Typically, flying black ants don’t bite, but they can cause damage to property. Carpenter ants can chew through wooden structures. They can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Another ant species that has wings is the termite. They have an equal length wing and straight antennae. The wings are usually black, but they can be red, green, or brown.

The term “flying ant” is a misnomer. They don’t really fly. The name is a misnomer because the term “flying ants” actually refers to the reproductives of ant species.

Flying ants are usually seen in large groups. These groups tend to swarm in open areas. They will also swarm on hilltops.
