Why Are Wasps Attracted to Light?

During the summer, it is common to see insects like wasps foraging for food. This is when the wasps change their diet from protein rich food to sugary food. While the wasps will feed on many types of food, the sweetest food will attract them the most.

Some of the food sources that will attract wasps are fruit, food waste, pet food, flowers, and foliage compost. It is also common to see wasps nesting in houses and close to the human dwellings.

Besides food and drink, wasps also like light. The compound eyes of wasps have thousands of facets that enable them to see high frequencies of light. These wavelengths are between 380 and 750 nanometers. The wasps can see ultraviolet light, but they cannot see red or blue light.

While it may seem like they are attracted to light, wasps are actually confused by it. They can’t see very well in the dark. Having light can confuse them, throwing them off their path.

Some wasps have nocturnal habits, meaning that they are active at night. However, other wasps are diurnal. During the day, they will investigate food sources, but they will not return to the same nest.

Wasps have a strong set of wings that beat up to 400 times per second. This allows them to lift their bodies. However, their wings are difficult to see while flying.

Although light can attract wasps, it can also be dangerous. This is because it can attract other insects to the light source.
