How Many Wasps in a Nest?
During the summer months, you may see a number of wasps flying around your home. The answer to how many wasps in a nest is probably no more than a few dozen. The nest is typically made up of rows of cells. These cells contain eggs and larvae.
When you see a nest, it is a good idea to back away. Wasps put a lot of time and effort into building a nest. If you are concerned about getting stung, you may want to bury the nest or seal it in a bin bag.
Wasps have a caste system, similar to ants. The queen is the head of the nest and she selects a suitable place for the nest. She will lay eggs in the nest cells. The non-reproductive workers take care of the queen and are responsible for foraging for food. They will also care for the young.
In the early spring, the queen will start searching for a nesting site. When she finds one, she scrapes the wood fibers with her jaws and secretes a pulp-like substance to build the nest.
The nest will grow as the number of wasps increases. By mid-summer, it may be large enough to swarm. It is then a good idea to treat the nest. Using a proprietary insecticide is a good option. Most garden centers carry a range of insecticides.
In winter, the queen wasp goes into hibernation. She is usually in a roof or attic. As the weather gets colder, the workers die off.
