How Fast Wasps Build Nests
Having a wasp nest on your property can be a serious nuisance. These insects have a nasty habit of stinging you if they become disturbed. They may even damage your property.
Wasps build nests in many different places. The largest wasp nest on record measured five feet nine inches in diameter. You can find them in wood, shrubs, and trees.
The nests of some wasps look like a hardened blob of cotton. Other wasps use mud to strengthen their nests. These nests can be as small as a golf ball or as large as a football. The queen wasp lays between 10 and 20 eggs. These eggs hatch into adult wasps.
Wasps build nests in the spring and summer. It takes about a week for a nest to complete. During that time, the queen wasp lays eggs that develop into adult wasps.
Once a nest is complete, the wasps die off. The nest will decompose naturally over the winter. In the spring, the queen wasp will choose a new location for her nest. If she decides not to move, the nest will remain there for the next year.
Some social wasps are territorial. They will build nests in high places such as trees. Others will prefer less-populated areas like rock crevices. Some will build their nests underground.
Wasps are not very dangerous, but they can become a nuisance if they build a nest in your home. If they are a problem in your area, you can try using an aerosol spray to kill them.
