How Do Wasps Get in the House?

Having wasps in your home can be a real pain. Wasps aren’t particularly friendly, and their sting can be quite painful. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep wasps from causing a problem.

First, keep doors closed. Many wasps enter through holes in windows and doors, so you’ll need to make sure they don’t get in. The best way to keep them out is to have screens fitted on your windows. Ideally, they should be fitted with a flap that’s big enough to keep the wasps out, but small enough to allow air to circulate.

Second, make sure your garbage bins are sealed with a tight lid. Wasps are attracted to meat, and open trash bins offer a food source. Third, clean up syrupy beverages, such as soda, to keep wasps away.

Finally, if you have a fireplace, make sure your chimney flue is properly sealed. If it’s not, wasps will fall onto the fireplace floor when they come through the chimney.

Wasps aren’t necessarily dangerous, but they can sting you without warning. Fortunately, they aren’t as aggressive as hornets. But they are still a nuisance, and you may wish to consider opening windows for fresh air.

You may also wish to install a fly screen. However, fly screens should be kept in good repair, or else they will attract insects that can damage your home.

If you don’t want to spend money on a fly screen, a wasp trap is an easy way to keep wasps from entering your home. To make a homemade trap, start by removing the top half of a 2-liter soda bottle. Flip it upside down, and slide the top third of the bottle into the base of the bottle. Use a small piece of screening between the flap and the vent to keep wasps from getting in.
