Can Wasps Eat Meat?
Among the most common wasps you’ll see is the yellow jacket wasp, which eats everything from meat to other insects. It also digests meat for protein.
Other species of wasps, such as paper wasps, ingest wood pulp to make their nest. There are over 20,000 different species of wasps, with each of them varying in diet and lifestyle. Some species, like mud daubers, are even known to hunt spiders.
Wasps can get into your home through tiny cracks in your window screens or through power lines. You may not see them landing on your dinner plates, but they can carry bacteria from rotten meat into your body.
Wasps are also capable of delivering painful stings. However, they don’t usually attack you at night. You may be able to walk safely near their nests after dark. However, you should never leave food out for them to find. If you want to be sure, keep any candy or sodas under covers.
Wasps do have a sweet tooth, though. In the winter, they are attracted to fallen fruit. They may also seek out sweet drinks like sodas or ice cream.
Wasps are also capable of chewing through meat. They do this by using their mandibles, which are a set of pinchers, on each side of their mouth. They do this to break up the meat and to help them get it to their nest.
It’s not unusual to see wasps flying around garbage cans and garbage bins. They’re not as aggressive as other wasps, but you should be aware of them.
