Why Are Termites Common in Homes?

Termites are small insects that are found in forests, but are also known to be a pest in homes. These destructive insects can chew through wood and even wallpaper. They are a part of the insect order Isoptera. In addition to eating wood, they also help to decompose plants.

Termites live in colonies. Each colony has a king and queen who are responsible for the reproduction of the colony. This is done through mating flights. The king and queen also serve as the epicentre of the new colony.

Termites are attracted to wet, moist conditions. The moisture is created by runoff and poor drainage. They also become attracted to damp wood, as it is more appealing.

Termites can invade homes through cracks in the foundation, door joints, siding and roof vents. They can also be attracted by plumbing issues. If you have a septic system, make sure the pipes are not backed up. This can cause too much moisture.

Termites are also attracted to firewood and stacks of firewood. You should always remove stacked wood away from your home’s foundation. If you have a septic tank, you may need to install a new one.

Termites are experts at hiding. You can spot them by looking for frass and mud tubes. They can also be spotted in the webs of spiders. They are also attracted to light.

Termites have three castes: workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The termites in each caste are physically different.
