Why Are Termites Attracted to Light?

Termites are highly attracted to light. The reason for this is that it helps them navigate through their surroundings and find their way to their next colony. Researchers are still unclear on how exactly this works. However, some theories suggest that it may be based on pheromones.

These pheromones send a signal to the colony that there is a threat and that the colony needs to find a place where it is illuminated. The colony then looks for a place where the food they need to survive is available. This is important because termites cannot digest plant-based material without moisture. If they are unable to find the soil or wood they need to survive, they die.

If you notice a large swarm of insects around your windows or doors, it is a sign of termite infestation. These are called swarmers and are actually the adults that are trying to start new colonies. You can spot them by closely looking at them.

When they settle, reproductive termites lose their wings. These adults are then known as kings and queens of the new colony. If you notice a large swarm, turn on all of your lights. They are also attracted to bright white lighting.

Another species of termite, the Formosan, is attracted to night lighting. These species are highly active throughout the year. These insects swarm at night and are often found in areas of homes lit up at night.

If you see a large swarm of insects, it is best to have a professional inspect your home. These creatures can be extremely difficult to get rid of. You might want to consider a professional termite treatment to eliminate the infestation.
