Which States Have the Most Termites?

Termites are a common problem, and one that is found in every state in the U.S. Depending on which species you are dealing with, the scope of damage can be substantial.

Termite species vary from state to state, with southern states having more infestations. Those located farther north tend to have fewer problems.

There are three major types of native termites in the United States. These include the subterranean, dampwood, and drywood species. These can be separated by the level of moisture they need to survive.

The most common and destructive type of termite is the Formosan termite. These insects are also called “super termites” because they are especially aggressive. They build large dens that can hold several million termites. These colonies are extremely dangerous and can cause the most damage in the shortest amount of time.

They swarm on warm sunny days. They create new colonies by finding exposed wood. They can be particularly destructive to wood structures.

They also need to have regular contact with the soil. They are capable of creating mud tubes to reach food sources. They can also infest tree stumps. They are known to cause billions of dollars of damage to homes and crops.

Those living in these states should take extra precautions to avoid termite infestations. It is important to inspect your property twice a year. You should also remove fallen or dying trees from your yard. Removing old mulch, wooden mulch, and dead wood is also helpful.
