What Are Formosan Termites?
Formosan termites are one of the most destructive species of termites in the world. They live in huge colonies and can cause substantial damage to structures in a short period of time. They also have large reproductive capabilities.
They are found in the United States in California, Hawaii, Illinois, North Carolina, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. They can infest wooden structures and have been known to cause power outages.
Termites are attracted to moisture and food. They tend to live in colonies and make nests in the ground or above ground. They are able to consume more wood than other subterranean termites.
The termite colony may include several million members. They build their nests out of wood particles, frass, and saliva. They have an insatiable appetite for food and are able to survive for months at a time.
The termite colony usually contains three castes. These are alates, soldiers, and reproductives. The alates are yellowish-brown and usually found near light fixtures. The soldiers have orange-brown oval-shaped heads and curved mandibles. They are very aggressive and attack approaching objects.
Formosan termites are very active during the day. They can cause major structural damage to a home in a short amount of time. They can destroy telephone insulation, causing power outages. They can chew through wooden planters and have been known to invade walls.
Formosan termites are not native to the United States. They were introduced to the country in the mid-20th century. They were thought to have entered the country through port cities.
