How to Get Rid of a Termite Swarm
If you notice a termite swarm in your home, it is a good idea to get rid of the swarmers. Termite swarmers are reproductive insects that seek mates. They are not harmful to humans and do not transmit diseases. But, if they land in your house, they may damage your property.
If you see a swarm, it’s important to identify the type of termite. Termites can be classified into three different categories. They include subterranean termites, drywood termites and flying termites. Each category of termite has its own set of characteristics.
Subterranean termites are one of the most common types of termites. They can be found throughout the United States. These termites live underground and are notorious for their activity.
Termite swarms are the result of overcrowding. If a colony becomes too crowded, the male and female termites will lose their wings. They will then leave the colony to find a new mate.
Swarming termites can appear in your home anytime of the year. The most common time for swarms to occur is during the spring. This is because the weather is warmer, and swarms are more likely to occur.
Drywood termites are able to fly, but they are not a threat to humans. They do, however, cause water damage to the structure of your home. Often, the swarmers will die of dehydration.
Flying termites are generally light in colour. They have two large translucent wings on either side of their body. These wings are usually curved, and are veiny. They can be as large as 3 centimetres per wing.
