How to Find Termites
It is important to know how to find termites, since they can cause damage to your property. You may think they look like ants, but there are many differences between the two. You should be able to spot them by their antennae, which are straight and bent at the ends.
You can also spot them by the mud tubes they build. These tubes are made of soil and wood particles. They provide a path from the ground to the wood that they are feeding on. They can extend up to 60 feet long. They are most likely to be found on buildings two stories high.
You may also see them swarming. Termite swarms are a sign of an attack. They resemble flying ants. However, many species of termites do not fly.
You can tell if a swarm is occurring by finding discarded wings on your windows, floor or baseboards. They are the same size as the front and back wings of the adult termites.
If you have a swarm, you need to protect yourself. You can use rocks or a termite repellent. You can also install a stethoscope, the same device doctors use to listen to the heartbeat, on the wall to detect the presence of termites.
You should also check for standing water near your home. It may be a pond or a gutter. Termites prefer moisture, so if you are dealing with standing water, it is a good idea to get it cleaned up.
