How Long Do Termites Fly?

Termites are a family of insects that have different roles. Generally, these insects live in colonies. Some species of termites have wings while others are not. A termite’s life cycle begins with mating flight.

During this flight, the male and female reproductive termites will travel to a suitable location to start a new colony. This is called swarming. The swarms usually last for thirty to forty minutes. A swarm of termites can land as many as 50,000 termites at once. These swarmers will die quickly if they cannot find any soil or water. They may be left on your furniture, counter tops or windowsills.

A termite swarm can be very frightening. If you notice flying termites in your home, it is probably a sign that the colony has been in the area for some time. Termites are known for entering your home through cracks in the foundation, brick mortar or wood. If they have reached your home, you should consider hiring a professional pest control company to help get rid of the infestation.

Termite swarms vary depending on the type of termite. They can come from subterranean, drywood or flying termites. Some of the more common swarming patterns are spotted around your windows and sliding glass doors. These are typically the first signs of a termite infestation.

Unlike flying ants, termites have only two parts: a thick body and one part that looks like a wing. They also have antennae that are straight and have a slight bend.
