How Do Termites Destroy Trees?

Termites are small insects that attack and destroy dead or dying trees. Termites are usually found in pine trees. They feed on cellulose, which is found in dead wood. They create tunnels and hollow out a tree’s trunk. This causes the tree to become unstable and susceptible to storms. If you see termite damage, you should get it treated as soon as possible.

If you aren’t sure if you have termites, check the tree for mud tubes. These are a brown, rusty-colored tubes that are about the diameter of a pencil. These tubes can be found on the bark of a tree or in the root system. They are a sign that your tree is infested.

Another sign that you have a termite infestation is to look for the presence of discarded wings. Termites leave wings as they die, so you can find them around the base of the tree.

Termites are also known to girdle the crown of a tree. This causes the tree to collapse during heavy winds. You should also look for hollow branches. This indicates an advanced infestation.

If you think your tree is infested, contact an arborist for an evaluation. An arborist can tell you if the tree might fall or break a limb.

If you find termites in your tree, you can apply liquid termiticides to the soil around the tree. You can also place termite bait stations on the perimeter of your property. Termiticides are child-safe and can be purchased at hardware stores.
