Fortunately, termite infestations can be treated effectively and inexpensively. The best thing to do is to detect an infestation early. While it may be hard to tell at first, you can easily spot the signs.

Termites are attracted to moisture and cellulose-containing food sources. The best way to prevent an infestation is to remove wood from the yard, particularly tree stumps. Never stack firewood against your home. It also helps to spray your yard with vinegar and lemon juice, which kills termites instantly.

Sodium borate is sold as borax powder and can be sprinkled around the infested area. You can also mix the powder with water and spray it on the infested areas. It’s a good idea to wear a dust mask and goggles to avoid inhaling the toxic fumes.

Another technique is to drill holes in the infested wood. If the hole is large enough, fill it with putty or a termiticide. Be careful not to drill into the root of the wood, which can cause even more damage.

Termite baits are another way to get rid of them. They’re not toxic to humans or animals, but they do have a high efficacy rate.
