Does Termites Look Like Ants?
Does termites look like ants? They are quite similar. Both insects have wings. But, ant’s are narrow in their hind wings, while termites have wide ones. Depending on the species, termites can have different colors. Some termites are white, while others are yellow.
Termites usually live underground and build their nests within the soil. They may infest houses or other buildings, but they rarely bite people. If you suspect that your home or business is infested, call a pest expert. They can inspect your house and recommend a course of action. They can also help you determine the level of infestation.
There are three distinct castes in a termite colony. Each caste carries out several functions within the nest. Soldier termites are responsible for securing the nest and attacking predators. They have a large, worker-like body, a large, curved head, and mandibles. Their bodies are generally lighter in color than their wings, and they can attack in many different ways.
Formosan subterranean termites are whitish to pale brown. They have larger heads than their eastern counterparts. They can leave visible mud tubes in wooden structures. They are also larger than their native counterparts.
Drywood termites are very similar to subterranean termites. They can be found in homes, fences, and other wooden structures. Their bodies are opaque, with dark-colored orangish-brown heads. They typically leave behind dry fecal pellets.
There are many termite species, each with a different appearance. You can learn more about them at the CSIRO’s termite hazard map.
