Do Termites Create Moisture in Your Home?

Termites are attracted to moisture. Besides the obvious need for water, termites also crave soil. They build mud tubes that protect them from dryness. These tubes are usually about the width of a pencil. They are found near wooden structures, and they may spread out like veins.

Termites can enter your home through cracks in the walls or through a hole in the foundation. They can also be spotted underneath siding or baseboards.

Termites can cause water damage, which can deteriorate the structure of your home. If you notice your floors sagging, your windows swelling, or ceiling tiles pulling away from the wall, you may have a termite infestation.

Aside from structural damage, a moist environment is a good way for termites to thrive. If you have a moisture problem in your home, you might need to install a dehumidifier or vent your roof to draw out the moisture.

There are several steps you can take to prevent a termite infestation. First, inspect your home for possible leaks. If you find one, make sure to repair the leak and reapply caulk. If the source of the problem is your plumbing, make sure you have properly functioning pipes.

Secondly, you should check your gutters for debris. This will divert excess water from the foundation. Lastly, you should clean your crawl space. You should consider installing a dehumidifier if you have a basement. Keeping your crawl space clean will also help keep termites away.
