Termites are attracted to the moisture that is present in a home. It is a good idea to inspect your home regularly for cracks and gaps around the foundation. If you find holes or gaps, seal them so that the termites cannot enter. You can also apply a treatment of Termidor, a termite-control substance that bonds to soil and does not leach through it.
Termites can travel through cracks in the foundation or in the floor and ceiling of a house. They may also travel behind brick veneers or inside of walls. In some cases, they will tunnel up to the ceiling joists or trusses.
Typically, block homes are less vulnerable to extensive exterior wall damage from termites. However, there is still plenty of wood for them to eat. If you notice soft spots, cracks or bubbling paint, it could be an indication of an infestation.
Often, termites will enter through expansion joints in the basement or garage. These joints are filled with insulation, and are intended to prevent damage from changes in temperature. Over time, the joints may begin to degrade, which can cause further problems.
