Fortunately, there are several ways you can keep termites from causing problems for your home. For one, you can install termite barriers around the exterior of your home. These barriers are composed of elastomeric sealants on high-strength backing. The sealants work by acting as a vapor barrier, preventing subterranean termites from getting inside.
If you want to prevent termites from invading your property, you can also place gravel between flower beds and the foundation of your house. You can also use downspouts to direct water away from the foundation.
Aside from these measures, you can use termite baits to eliminate the queens and young of the colony. These baits contain Novaluron, a chemical that is extremely toxic to termites. You can also spray a natural pesticide on your mulch to kill the pests.
Termites are attracted to moisture, which is why they will find their way into your mulch piles. This moisture can be a real problem for you, however. If you can, you should place your mulch about six inches away from the foundation of your home. If you don’t have this distance, you should leave at least a foot of space between your house and your mulch.
You should also monitor for termites in your mulch. Termites can be detected by boring holes in the mulch or by building mud tubes.
