Why Do Spiders Come Inside in the Winter?
Spiders are able to survive cold temperatures. They produce a chemical in their blood to prevent their cells from freezing. This natural antifreeze is called polyhydroxy alcohol. If spiders did not have this chemical, their cells would freeze and burst.
A large number of spider species live both indoors and outdoors. However, not every species will survive winter. Some of these creatures hibernate, while others are active during the winter. There are also several types of spiders that do not like to live indoors.
When the temperature drops, female spiders look for a safe place to lay eggs. Some of these places include dark, secluded areas, such as basements. Others build pods in chimneys and downspouts.
Some spiders have an ice-resistant coat that allows them to stay hidden in cold environments. These spiders will often seek shelter in wood, leaves, and rock piles.
Some spiders can survive temperatures as low as 23 degrees Fahrenheit. But they are not meant to live in freezing temperatures. The cold weather slows their metabolisms and makes them sluggish.
When the weather begins to warm, spiders come out of hiding. The warmer days are usually when they seek out food.
The average house spider lives in a home. Some of them, however, are not native to the area. For example, the brown recluse spider is common in North Carolina. Nevertheless, these spiders are a nuisance to homeowners.
Many spiders find their way into homes through gaps. They are particularly fond of dark, quiet places.
