The Richmond Spiders
WouterThe University of Richmond athletic program has been known as the Spiders since 1894. Although the team has had some success in sports, it has not been an athletic powerhouse. However, the Spiders do have a mascot.
In addition to the Spiders, the University also has a men’s lacrosse team. After the 2014 season, the Southern Conference took over sponsorship of the men’s lacrosse program. The program is led by Dan Chemotti. The men’s lacrosse team has been a member of the SoCon for a number of years.
The University of Richmond’s football program is headed by Russ Huesman. During his career, he has coached 46 All-Americans and has led the program to nine conference championships. He will enter his thirteenth season as the collegiate head coach in the fall of 2021.
The Richmond Spiders have had some success in the Atlantic 10 Conference this season. They earned the second A-10 Championship in program history. This accomplishment was aided by the Spiders’ impressive performance in the conference tournament. The Spiders beat the fifth-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes 67-63.
The Richmond Spiders were the first 15-seed in NCAA history to reach the tournament. The Spiders made the best of their situation by winning three games in three days.
The Richmond Spiders’ starting line up includes three seniors, including guard Jacob Gilyard. This five-foot nine senior has emerged as a key player on the veteran side of the lineup. He had a huge game against the Hawkeyes, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
