Spiders and Rashes
Spiders do not usually cause rashes. However, there are some cases where spider bites can cause a rash. If you’ve been bitten, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Spider bites are not as painful as bee stings. You will feel a slight bump and itching for a short period of time. Most spiders do not have enough fangs to break skin.
Some spiders can be extremely dangerous. These include black widow, brown recluse, and hobo spiders. They will bite you if you disturb them.
The toxin in spiders can kill surrounding skin tissue. It also causes swelling and blisters. In some cases, the bite can be so severe that it can be fatal.
Most spider bites heal on their own within a few days. But if your spider bite is so serious that it’s causing a rash, you may have an infection. Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics to help you get rid of the rash.
To help with the pain from your spider bite, you can take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Acetaminophen or Benadryl are common alternatives. Other medications you can take are diphenhydramine.
You should also keep the area clean by using soap and water. This will help prevent infection and irritation from occurring. A cool compress can also be applied to the affected area. Make sure the bandage you use is snug but not tight.
If the rash persists, or if your scab falls off, you will need to see your doctor. In some cases, you will need to undergo a small procedure to drain the pus.
