Huntsman Spiders
The huntsman spider is a large spider. They can be found in most parts of the world. The species ranges in size from 9 inches to over 30 cm. It is usually grey or brown in color. Usually, they live under the bark of trees.
Huntsman spiders are not harmful to humans. They are usually timid and do not attack unless threatened. However, they do possess venom. When disturbed, the spider will try to run away. If you encounter a huntsman spider, it is best to leave it alone.
The female huntsman spider is usually bigger than the male. She lays hundreds of eggs in a flat oval-shaped sac. These eggs are then wrapped in white silk. A few months after laying the eggs, the mother will defend them from any attacker.
Although huntsman spiders are not dangerous to humans, they are highly venomous. According to Dr Linda Rayor of Cornell University, they have bitten her 12 times in the past.
Huntsman spiders are a common pest in the southern states of the United States. In the northeastern region, they are not very common.
The spiders are also known as giant crab spiders. They are members of the Sparassidae family. Their habitat is usually under rock or under the bark of trees.
Some species also carry their egg sac under their body. Female huntsman spiders will lay an egg sac under the bark of the tree. Afterwards, the mother will open the sack to assist the larvae.
